If you’ve been struggling to figure out how to achieve this in CapCut, you’re in luck! This easy-to-follow guide will show you exactly how to put text behind objects in a few simple steps. By the end, you’ll have the skills to apply this effect to any project, including with AI avatars. Check out the video!

Getting Started

Before we dive in, make sure you’re logged into CapCut. This tutorial uses the web version of CapCut, but the steps should be similar on the desktop app. If you don’t have an account yet, sign up and log in to access the dashboard.

Once you’re in, select or upload the video you want to work on. For this tutorial, we’ll use a marketing video example, but you can follow along with any clip.

Step 1: Add Text to Your Video

  1. Select a Scene and Add Text
Choose the point in your video where you want the text to appear. Navigate to the Text tab on the left of your dashboard and click Add Body Text. This places a text box in the center of your video.

  2. Customize Your Text
Type in your message and format it as you like. You can adjust the font, size, color, and position to suit your needs. For example, in our video, we’ll add the text “Denzel is frustrated” to match the emotional scene on screen.

  3. Position the Text
Move the text box to where you want it on the screen. Make sure the text layer appears in the timeline below your video. You can stretch or shorten the text layer in the timeline to control how long it appears on-screen.

Step 2: Create the Layer Effect

To place the text behind your object (in this case, Denzel), we’ll use layers to create the effect. Here’s how it works:

  1. Duplicate Your Video Clip
Duplicate the video clip where your text will appear. You can do this by either clicking Duplicate or dragging the original clip from your media files into the timeline again. Position the duplicated clip directly above the original in your timeline. Both clips should align perfectly.

  2. Remove the Background
Click on the duplicated video layer, then go to Smart Tools and select Auto Removal. CapCut’s AI will remove the background from the top layer, leaving you with just the object (Denzel) in the foreground.

  3. Layer Your Text
With the background removed from the top layer, your text will now be visible behind the object. Play the video to see the effect in action—your audience will see the text cleverly positioned behind the subject.

Step 3: Fine-Tune the Effect

If you’d like the text to display throughout the entire clip or for only specific scenes, adjust its duration in the timeline. For instance, you can shorten the text layer to match a specific moment or stretch it to cover a longer time frame. You can also continue customizing the text’s font, color, or position to match your vision.

Adding Text Behind AI Avatars

Want to add text behind an AI avatar? It’s even simpler!

  1. Select an avatar from the Elements or Avatars section. Drag the avatar into your timeline and place it where you’d like.
  2. Move your text layer directly below the avatar layer in the timeline.
  3. Right-click the avatar layer and choose Remove Background. CapCut’s AI will do the rest, automatically separating the avatar from its background.
  4. Adjust the positioning of the text and avatar layers as needed. The text should now appear behind the avatar.

Simple and Stunning

And that’s it! Whether you’re working with video clips or AI avatars, layering is the key to achieving this effect. By duplicating layers, removing the background, and positioning your text strategically, you can easily create a professional and visually stunning result.

Additional Tips

  • You can experiment with different fonts, colors, and effects to make your text stand out even more.
  • Use this technique to highlight crucial information in marketing videos or create playful effects in personal projects.
  • Keep your timeline organized by labeling layers and using markers to keep track of key moments in your video.
